What Akshara is

Akshara is a word-wheel puzzle game built for Indian languages — to our knowledge the first of its kind designed Telugu-first rather than translated from English. You swipe letters on a wheel to build words and fill a crossword board, and every completed level shows the real meaning of every word you found, so the game teaches while you play. There are thousands of levels across three language journeys, each set at real Indian heritage landmarks painted for the game. It is free to play, works offline after the first visit, and needs no login or account.

Who makes it

Akshara is built and published by Shrinfinity OPC Private Limited, an independent studio in Hyderabad, India — the city whose Charminar opens the game's journey. It is made by a small team that grew up between Telugu, Hindi and English, for families like ours: the game's very first players were our own parents. How the content is made

The words and meanings in Akshara are curated, not dumped from a dictionary. Words are chosen for daily-life recognition and segmented into the syllable units (aksharas) the wheel uses. Definitions start from open scholarly sources and are then substantially reworked for the game: grammatical cross-references ("plural of…") are resolved into real meanings written in the player's own language, thousands of English entries are re-glossed from obscure first senses to their everyday meaning, and every word and every definition passes a family-content screening gate before a release can ship — levels that fail review are withdrawn entirely. This curation is ongoing; the release notes record it, and the articles explain the design and the pipeline in depth. Machine-assembled dictionary evidence does not represent approval by a human language editor, and we say so plainly.

Telugu and Hindi word meanings are derived from Wiktionary, available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. The derived meaning data in this game is likewise available under CC BY-SA 4.0.

English word meanings are derived from WordNet. WordNet 3.0 © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved. Used under the WordNet License; Princeton University makes no representations about the suitability of this data and provides it "as is" without warranty.

Telugu word frequency intuition comes from an in-house daily-usage library authored for this game. English word frequencies use the open wordfreq dataset.
